Challenge In 2025, the QSR pizza category was burdened by rising prices and newer fast-casual rivals eroding pizza’s reputation as the go-to affordable group meal. At the same time, Papa Johns trailed behind giants like Domino’s and Pizza Hut. To successfully launch their new pan pizza, Papa Johns had to completely rewrite the narrative. They faced the steep challenge of winning back skeptical Gen Z and Millennial consumers, educating foodies on their ten years of culinary craftsmanship, and driving sign-ups for their Papa Rewards loyalty program in a highly competitive market.

INSIGHTS Younger consumers and modern foodies crave the exclusivity and prestige of high-status dining, yet they are increasingly disillusioned by overpriced culinary gatekeeping. When analyzing Papa Johns’ culinary process, their new pan pizza checked every single box of the rigorous MICHELIN Guide criteria. However, despite over 70 pizzerias being listed in the Guide, no pizzeria in history had ever been awarded a coveted MICHELIN star. This revealed an unexpected human truth: people love the drama of elite standards, and there was a massive, untapped desire to see an everyday favourite demand the culinary respect it actually deserved.

IDEA Position Papa Johns as the first-ever pizzeria to openly chase a MICHELIN star. To launch the pan pizza, they transformed a Lower East Side restaurant into an exclusive, ultra-premium dining hotspot. Select tastemakers, media, and Papa Rewards members were treated to a curated three-course menu featuring white-glove service, table-side preparation by the Executive Chef, and a dedicated soda sommelier. By treating QSR pizza with the theatrical reverence of haute cuisine, they gamified rewards program sign-ups, ignited massive social buzz, and proved that world-class quality doesn’t require a white tablecloth.
