Challenge Built using an increasing amount of synthetic materials, modern home fires burn up to eight times faster than they did 50 years ago. Today, families now have less than two minutes to escape a fire (down from 17 minutes), yet 69% of people falsely believe they have plenty of time.

INSIGHTS People ignore abstract dangers until they feel personal. Parents have a fierce instinct to help protect their kids, but they assume their own home is inherently safe. They treat fire safety as a school or workplace requirement, not a domestic necessity. Traditional statistics fail because people can’t visualize a tragedy happening in their own space. To force real action, we had to strip away the abstraction and make families viscerally experience a potential threat inside their own sanctuary.

IDEA Kidde launched “Prepare. Plan. Practice.”: a first-of-its-kind web-based AR (augmented reality) fire drill simulator that brings fire safety training into the home, disrupting complacency and addressing the awareness gap. With a simple QR code and no app download required, the platform superimposes realistic 3D smoke and flames virtually into the user’s actual home, showing what a fire could look like in their own kitchen, reading nook, child’s bedroom, or other space. The simulator makes the invisible danger personal and impossible to ignore with gamified education, interactive “hotspots”, and encourages families to physically practice their escape routes against a live two-minute countdown enhanced by spatial audio. The tool also offers a Family-Friendly Mode to ensure the experience was inclusive and not distressing for children. Backed by fire authorities, it turned abstract education into an engaging, potentially life-saving, family-friendly tool.
