In fact, Gen Z and Millennials are enthusiastically reclaiming them. The catch? 33% of Canadian Gen Z and 37% of US Gen Z visit a mall or retail space weekly with zero intention of buying anything.

Nearly half (41 to 47%) use retail centers as a convenient meeting spot for friends and family, turning commercial space into a non-commercial living room.

For traditional retail marketers, this presents an existential paradox. How do you market to a generation that fills your physical footprint but refuses to convert at the register?

The Shift: From Point of Sale to Point of Presence

To understand this behavior, communications leaders need to look past traditional retail economic methods and examine modern consumer psychology.

Younger consumers face severe screen fatigue, and they’re starving for real physical third spaces – a quarter of US Gen Z and nearly 20% of Canadian Gen Z lack a third place. They want places outside of home and work where they can just exist without pressure.

There is no shortage of media headlines highlighting youth isolation, but our data says this is also misguided. Young adults want connection. They’re just dealing with micro-social anxiety, with 1-in-3 worried about bothering people or making awkward small talk.

The mall offers the perfect solution: a climate-controlled, predictable, and unstructured environment for ambient connection. Young adults go to walk around (55 to 60%), people-watch, and absorb crowd energy – gaining a sense of community without the pressure of initiating conversation or navigating awkward interactions.

If your strategy counts non-buyers as wasted impressions, you might be misreading the market. Mallmaxxing proves physical retail’s newest currency isn’t instant conversion. It’s presence, dwell time, and genuine emotional connection.

The Engine: The Psychology of Little Treat Culture

While young consumers put off big-ticket discretionary spending, they aren’t tightening their belts entirely. Instead, they’re guarding their small and mighty indulgences fiercely.

When forced to trim monthly budgets, 41 to 45% of consumers prioritize daily treats like specialty iced lattes, boba, and artisanal pastries, along with dining out (46 to 48%), above physical goods like clothing, electronics, or decor (39 to 40%).

In today’s economy, a $200 jacket feels irresponsible. A $6 specialty drink feels manageable. It delivers instant emotional ROI, a quick dopamine hit, and a brief pause from daily stress.

Here lies the multi-million dollar opportunity for retail brands: little treats build the day-to-day reputation that ultimately drives long-term brand equity.

To capitalize on the convergence of Mallmaxxing and Treat Culture, CMOs and PR Leaders can evolve their experiential and brand strategy in three simple ways.

1. Re-index Store Footprints for Dwelling, Not Just Transacting

If Gen Z uses retail spaces to hang out, give them a reason to hang out inside or near your store. Turn your high density sales spaces into a place worth hanging out – introduce interactive testing stations, conversation-worthy displays and ambient social spaces.

Brands that encourage low-pressure dwelling build organic trust and top-of-mind recall when consumers make a major purchase – which might happen online after seeing products IRL.

2.
